What I’m Reading – October 29, 2015

Every so often, I go on a reread kick. It doesn’t matter if I have a dozen new books in the to-read pile; instead, I want to slip into a story I already know. It’s a bit like visiting old friends. I’m currently revisiting Whitley Strieber’s The Hunger and before that, I reread Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman and The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin. Next up? Probably Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. I am, however, interspersing the rereads with work from the to-read pile and here are some recommendations from the latter:

Novels & Anthologies:

The Death House by Sarah Pinborough
Aickman’s Heirs edited by Simon Strantzas
Skein and Bone by V. H. Leslie
Mermaids and Other Mysteries of the Deep edited by Paula Guran
The Monstrous edited by Ellen Datlow
The Case Against Satan by Ray Russell
Tampa by Alissa Nutting

Short Fiction:

“Some Gods of El Paso” by Maria Dahvana Headley in Tor.com
“Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers” by Alyssa Wong in Nightmare Magazine
“The Game of Smash and Recovery” by Kelly Link in Strange Horizons
